Phoenix's modern history
starts in 1867, Jack Swilling of Wickenburg rested his
horse near the White Tank Mountains. Looking at the Salt
River Valley and the rich soil he saw the prospect of
good farmland, all he needed was water.
This saw the birth of the Swilling Irrigation Canal Co.,
which that year began work on a canal to take water from
Salt River to irrigate the Valley. In March 1868, work
was complete and slowly crops began to grow.
Slowly others joined Swilling and a new community started
to grow. Various names were suggested for the community
and Darrell Duppa, a Scotsman, suggested Phoenix, as a
new community was coming from the ashes or ruins of previous
ancient civilizations that had inhabited the lands previously. |
